About Denise

Denise HavlanDenise is an award winning fiber artist from Plainfield, Illinois. Her work has appeared in galleries and quilt exhibitions nationally and throughout the world. Composition, color, and design combine to play significant roles in her work.

Not conforming to any particular code of methodology, Denise allows each individual piece to determine the techniques used as it develops through the construction process. "I do not have an absolute approach when I begin a piece but let it evolve spontaneously throughout the creative process."

Denise's technical methods are a combination of machine and hand appliqué and embroidery stitches that are enhanced or altered using various surface design techniques. With an illustrative approach Denise's work imparts strong visual impact. The quilts are a celebration of the world we live in and the affect we are having on it.

Artist's Statement

Art shapes the way I perceive the things I see around me. "Materializing" this vision through quilts permits the opportunity to share my particular insight with the viewer. Hopefully this will be a memorable experience.

I use familiar images that sometimes reflect a personal commentary on social or environmental issues of the day. Considered a bit of a romantic in my approach I love to weave the beauty of living forms within their environment. This beauty can be visually pleasing and, at times disturbing to the articulate eye. I am not trying to re-create reality in my imagery but rather capture the essence of the way I see and feel about the subject in that moment in time.

Convinced that people have a natural bond to fabric and are drawn into work created using the medium, I am impassioned to make quilts!
