Painted Orchid 101
Full Day Workshop

One cannot go to a quilt show today without seeing the numerous works that have been embellished with fabric paint, pens or colored pencils. Even traditional applique quilts are now being enhanced with these detailing techniques. Don't be left behind. This is a surface design technique that you must add to your quilt making repertoire. The paints are pre-mixed and ready to go. Even for the more advanced quilter who may be using these techniques we will cover enhancing details that you must try. The finished quilt is 9" x 12". Beginners.....we want you!
Paint Kit ($25 per student) Paid to instructor at time of workshop. Kit includes: action sheet, pre-mixed paints, paint thickener, paper towels, 2 paint brushes, paint cups, orchid pattern and template plastic.
Supply List for Participants
- Sewing machine in good working order. Feed dogs should drop. Include extra machine needles, bobbins, darning foot, applique and 1/4" foot.
- Machine needles - Top stitch or quilting needles of various sizes.
- Tabletop extender (optional) - A helpful tool.
- Fabric -Minimum 1/2 yard cuts of a variety of color choices. Painterly batiks work best with fabric paint. For orchid petals choose medium to light hues. Whites, pinks and violets work well for orchid petals. Greens for leaves and stems, not too dark. Choose complimentary colors for your background so the orchid stands out. The final border fabric can be "showy". You will need a backing fabric also.
- Thread - Match your threads to your orchid, stem and leaf fabric. Have fun with your background.
- Fabric markers - Color Assortment (include black and brown) Pebeo Setaskrib, Sakura Identipen and Pigma Micron are three that I like. Include bold and fine tip.
- Colored pencils - Assortment of colors. I like Prismacolor pencils.
- Marking pencils for fabric & paper.
- Batting - 1/2 yard cut - A low loft dense batt is best. An 80/20 blend is what I use.
- Fusible web 1 yard cut - Pellon Wonder Under regular #805
- Teflon sheet (optional) - Nice for working with fusible web.
- Iron on stabilizer - 1/2 yard cut of medium weight or Pellon Craft Fuse. Student's choice.
- General sewing supplies - Include scissors.
- Plastic sheet - To protect tables. Garbage bags will work with masking tape.
- Rotary cutter/mat/scissors/ruler - Best if each student has their own.
- Iron and iron mat - Best if each student has their own.
- Press cloth - To be used to help set paints.
- Additional irons and ironing board provided by guild is advised.
