Two Day Workshop

A sure sign of spring as two goldfinches await the arrival of their nestlings. Spend two creative days constructing this scene. All material needed is in the kit, including the fabric (backing fabric not included).The birds are ready for you to add details using fabric marker. Our nest is made from raffia and various other materials. If the student chooses she may decide to incorporate broderie perse in her scene. (Additional bird choice: Blue indigo buntings.)
This is an intermediate level class requiring students to focus on the construction techniques and be self sufficient. It will be worth the effort as your scene comes to life. The techniques learned will broaden your art quilting skills! Student will decide on the level of difficulty as they begin construction.
Kit $45 - Includes: Action sheet, 2 cuts of decor fabric, tulle, tree fabrics, birds printed on yellow or blue fabric, eggs, nest materials, 1 butterfly applique, 1 smudge stick, bird illustration, branch & tree templates. Students are welcome to bring additional fabrics after looking at the class sample. Decor fabrics must be cut 18"x 18". Tree bark fabrics can be various cuts.
Supply List for Participants
- Sewing machine in good working order. Feed dogs should drop. Include extra machine needles, bobbins, darning foot, 1/4" foot.
- Machine needles - Top stitch, sizes 12,14,16 or quilting needles of various sizes can be used.
- Hand applique needle - (optional) Nice result but requires skill to complete somewhat quickly.
- Table top extender (optional) - A helpful too
- Fabric - Batiks are best. 1/2 yard cuts of backing fabric. Include a light, a dark and a medium. Color will depend on the decor fabric I have for class. A selection of fat quarters in blues, greens and browns. Prints and solids are acceptable.
- Batting - 1 yard - Heirloom 80/20 or Warm & Natural. Low loft and dense is best.
- Threads - Assortment of colors to include light yellows, ecru, greens, blues etc. A good selection of browns and rust for tree bark and branches. You will be zig zagging raw edges down.
- Monofilament Thread - IMPORTANT - Include clear & smoke. Most of the quilt will use this thread.
- Fusible web - 1 yard cut - Pellon Wonder Under regular #805.
- Iron on stabilizer - 1 yard cut of Pellon Craft Fuse #808 or Decor Bond #809.
- Colored Pencils - IMPORTANT - White for feather tips. Assortment of yellow, brown, golden brown and orange for shading goldfinches. Blues for buntings. Instructor will have a small supply on hand.
- Pencil Sharpener
- White acrylic paint and small brush for feather tips. (Optional) Instructor will have a supply.
- Fabric Markers - IMPORTANT - Broad tip for fill in and fine tip for details. Include brown, black & blue. Sakura IDentipen, Pebeo SetaSkrib, and Pigma Micron are all good fabric markers with minimal bleed. These are used to add color detail to the birds (have a couple of each). Michaels, Dick Blick, Jerry's Artorama and Prochemical & Dye carry one or two of the above. You can order on line.
- Tracing Paper - Two to three 8 1/2" x 11" sheets.
- Fabric turning tools - (optional) - Instructor will have one set. This is not required to complete the project. Simple broderie perse will do.
- Fray Check - IMPORTANT
- Fabric Marking Pencils - For light & dark fabrics.
- General sewing supplies - Include safety pins, set of small sharp scissors and fine tip tweezers.
- Rotary cutter/mat/ruler - Each student needs their own to be self-reliant.
- Iron and iron mat - Each student needs their own to be self-reliant. Check if guild supplies also.
- Extension cord/power strip - Check with guild, may be supplied
- QUILTING GLOVES - My favorite tool.
Instructor will have misc. supplies on hand to include white paint/brushes and fabric "turning tools".
Instructor will require 2 large tables, pin board for display of work and electrical power access. Additional iron/boards set up.
